Paper Airplanes of Fire

 Paper Airplanes of Fire
graphic designer: 2010-2013
Paper Airplanes of Fire is a Chicago land area party/alt/hard rock band. Paper Airplanes of Fire is comprised of three seasoned musicians who call Chicago their home base and are becoming Chicago land’s premiere original alternative rock band. The band plays a variety of covers and original songs, offers a variety of merchandise, and has a full album available to fans. They have quite a following all around the Chicago land area and are only growing in their fan base.
I am the graphic designer for this band. I have been working with them for several years. I have set them up with a new logo, several flyers, and have a download card (for their newest release)in the works. As their popularity grows, we have already discussed creating a bandcamp webpage and more interactive ideas for their social networking sites.

Band Logo
The band members said they were unhappy with the look of their previous logo. I agreed that the logo created wasn’t fitting to the type of music that they played. The original logo was a child’s writing on lined paper, not really what one would imagine for an alternative rock band. Since the band often goes by their initials, PAOF, I wanted to ensure that the new logo would easily show the fans the abbreviation, while retaining the idea of the band’s “fiery” image. After several drafts, and minor type changes, the ending result is what you see.
 Mickey Finn's-Screen Print Flyer
This flyer was created for screen printing. It was made to be two color and simple. The flaming airplane is actually the visual logo for the band. I was looking to create a graphic that would illustrate the band’s image, while maintaining visual simplicity.
The Lodge-Flyer
The boys stated that they wanted some fliers for summer. I wanted to use the idea of a tattoo for type. I figured a picture of a half naked female would create some intrigue for their fan base, and allow me a model with a lot of skin available. I used the logo and show info to use for the tattoo. I used the contours of her stomach to create the look like it was wrapping to her body and used some transparency tore-create the skin texture.
Millennium Park-Flyer
I wanted to create a flier that would be easy to copy and still encompass the rock and roll effect. So I had decided to go with black and white. What's more rock and roll than celebrity mug shots? I create the info using Tahoma, and spaced the words and numbers out to read as a board from the mug shot.
Blarney's Island-Flyer
This event was a large on for the band.Blarney's Island is an intensely popular summer spot in Lake County. They had several events going on and I wanted to ensure that the summer fun effect was felt by the viewer. I used the PJ/Lingere Party(as spelled by their website) to make a summery effect and get people motivated to come out. The type used on this flier is called “Grace”(named after Grace Slick.) I had created the typeface for this flyer.
T-Shirt Design
The boys decided on having a simple logo graphic for their t-shirts. They wanted to allow choices for people, so they also had multiple colors created. Solid green...
...and tie dye blue and gray; red, white, and blue.

paof.bandcamp.com
Paper Airplanes of Fire was in need of a website, or someplace where they can allow fans to download songs, view their shows, and see their merchandise. Bandcamp is the becoming increasingly popular for musicians since it is free, offers a custom web address, and combines all the needs of the band. A image map was created for the band to highlight important areas of the site. The logo and entire site was customized to match the band's style. An index page was created for fans who just wanted to jump in and hear their favorite song. The site allows a connection to paypal so that fans can pay for and download their favorite albums right on site. The site has a side bar that allows songkick to connect to the site. That keeps all the show dates current. The merch page connects to a big cartel page for the band to display the shirts that they have available to be sold. Facebook sends you right to the bands page so you can stay connected. The band has loved their page. They really liked the download artwork that accompanies each song. Their fabn base really appreciated having a place to finally get the songs they love. The band has become profitable by having this webpage available to their fans.
